Korea aims to 40% share of the global market
Korea Republic is aiming to capture a 40% share of the global shipbuilding market by 2010, up from the market share of 32% in 2001.
The plan also includes raising the share of high-value shipbuilding from 13% market share to 35%. The ministry is seeking to lift exports of shipbuilding material from $370m annually to $2billion.
To achieve its 2010 goal, the Korean government is planning to inject
KRW 120billion into the shipbuilding industry over the next 10 years. |

MOL expands in the West
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has announced plans to start a new liner service linking Europe and West Africa, but at the same time is reshuffling some intra-Asian services to reduce capacity.
From the end of June MOL is to run a bi-weekly African Rainbow Express (ARX) service linking ports in Belgium, the UK, and France with ports on the west coast of Africa using the
1,000 TEU container ships MOL Rainbow and MOL Sahara.

LA port raises operating costs
The US Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved an increase in operating expense at the Port of Los Angeles under a fiscal year 2002/2003 budget of about almost US$498 million, a sum exceeding its anticipated operating revenues of about US$300 million. On this basis, the
Port's budget will be in deficit although it expects that trade volumes would rise by 11.8 per cent over the previous
year's figures.

Europe threatens to bring back aid for shipbuilders
The European Union yesterday gave the go-ahead for the reintroduction of state aid to European shipbuilders, if negotiations with South Korea to find an agreement on alleged unfair subsidies to Korean yards do not succeed by the end of September.
Diplomats from the 15 EU governments approved plans to allow state aid for some types of ship and to start legal action against Korea at the World Trade
